A tag in OpenStreetMap is a pair of key and value that is associated with a primitive data element (node, way or relation).
Both the key and value is a string, but they can represent numeric values as well.
They do not have to conform to a schema, but there are agreed-upon convections within the community for common use cases, that are documented on the wiki.
